VW id 4 glass roof

On the VW ID.4, the glass roof is a great feature. Allow more light and heat radiation in, or enjoy looking at the blue sky or night stars.
If you want to look through the beautiful panoramic roof, you’ll first need to retract (open) the sun blind. This is a straightforward process.
This page will walk you through opening and closing the VW ID. 4’s glass roof sun blind.
Read your owner’s manual for more information. Don’t operate your sun blind until you understand the safety implications and system limitations.

How to open the sun blind

Opening the sun blind is about as simple as it gets. Follow the instructions below.

  1. Sit in the driver’s seat with the ignition on.
  2. Find the sun blind function button.
    • This is a thin indented strip above your head in the car’s center.
    • It’s just below the SOS button.
    • You’ll see a sun icon in the center of a line with inverted arrows at either end.
  3. Swipe from the bottom to the top.
    • Let go after doing this.

The sun blind will open completely.
Depending on your ID.4 specification, you may also be able to open the sun blind from the infotainment system or by using voice control.

Opening the sun blind to a certain point

You don’t have to open the sun blind all the way. To manually retract it to the point of your choosing, follow these instructions:

  1. Start the sun blind opening procedure as detailed in the previous section.
  2. Interrupt the automatic opening process by tapping the sun blind function button. It then stops in position.

Alternatively, you could operate the system manually:

  1. Turn the ignition on.
  2. Swipe up on the sun blind function button.
    • Don’t let go.
  3. Hold the function button until the sun blind reaches the desired point.
  4. Let go.

The opening process will stop as soon as you let go.

Closing the sun blind on the VW ID.4 glass roof

Close the sun blind by doing the reverse of the above.

  • Swipe the sun blind function button forward (top to bottom).
    • Don’t hold your finger in place.

The sun blind will completely close, blocking all the light through the VW ID.4 glass roof.
Voice control and/or the infotainment system can also be used to open the sun blind. This depends on your specific vehicle specification.

Closing the sun blind to a certain point

If you don’t want to close the sun blind completely, you have two options. Either:

  1. Swipe the sun blind function button from top to bottom to begin the closing procedure.
  2. Tap the function button to stop it wherever you choose.

Or

  1. Swipe the sun blind function button forward.
    • Hold your finger in place.
  2. Release your finger when the blind reaches the desired point.

Automatic roll-back function if an obstruction is detected

The sun blind contains a roll-back function. If it detects an obstruction (for example, a hand or tall luggage item) when closing, the mechanism will stop and reverse.
This helps with the following:

  • Injury prevention
  • Sun blind protection
  • Sun blind motor protection

Overriding the roll-back function

If the roll-back feature kicks in when you try to close the sun blind, follow these steps:

  1. Check for obstructions and remove anything in the way.
  2. Try to close the sun blind again.
  3. If the blind rolls back again, swipe forward and hold the function button within five seconds. This overrides the roll-back function.
  4. If the blind still won’t close or won’t close the next time you use it, go to a VW mechanic or dealer.

Be aware that overriding the sun blind feature button can cause serious injuries. Be mindful of your surroundings and be prepared to stop immediately.

Read your owner’s manual to understand the health and safety aspects. In particular, be careful when overriding the roll-back function. Be aware of crush and pinch injuries.
You’ll find a copy of the VW ID.4 owner’s manual below.
