The Tesla Model Y is one of the best-selling cars of all time, smashing records left, right, and center. Its SUV crossover build makes it ideally suited to markets worldwide.
In fact, it was the most-bought electric car in the UK in 2022, shortly followed by the Model 3. There’s no surprise there, I suppose.
As an SUV crossover, you might be wondering about the dimensions of the Model Y. As such, I delved into the latest Tesla Model Y owner’s manual (2023) to find some answers. You’ll find them below.
I always recommend reading your own owner’s manual. This contains model-specific information and may differ from what you find on this page! Likewise, the figures here may be outdated if you’re reading them a year or two from now.

How are a car’s dimensions measured?
When a car’s exterior dimensions are measured, you’ll typically see readings like the following:
- Height: the road to the highest point of the car
- With correctly inflated tires
- Length: the front of the front bumper to the rear of the rear bumper
- Wheelbase: the center of the front wheel to the center of the back wheel
- Wheelbase and length are not the same things!
- Width: the distance between the furthest points on either side of the car. This may also include readings accounting for side mirrors.
- Track: the horizontal distance from the center of the tire’s tread across the axle to the center of the other tire’s tread
- Track is often confused with wheelbase. Track measures across the axle; the wheelbase measures down the same side.
- Overhang: the horizontal distance from the center of the front wheel to the furthest point of the front bumper.
- The same applies to the rear overhang.
- Ground clearance: the height underneath the car between the sill and the road, measured between the two axles.

Do the Tesla Model Y’s dimensions matter?
You’ll need to know the Tesla Model Y’s dimensions in certain circumstances. These might include the following:
- When needing to temporarily go off-road (such as driving across a field at a fair)
- When parking in a small garage or other small space
- When going on a trip and deciding how much luggage you can take
- If your route has old, low bridges and you’re taking a roof rack
- For certain taxes and permits in cities or on sites
- Etc.
As mentioned, Tesla specifically notes that dimensions might vary slightly from what they list. If you need to carefully check a tight measurement, do it with a tape measure.
Reading your owner’s manual is a vital part of car ownership. You’ll find all the dimensions for your Tesla located here, typically near the back. Use the glossary and look for ‘Dimensions’ to see the exact page.
